Behold Jesus

The Thought Behind Sunday

We are all theologians.

The word theology simply means words about God. If you have words about God — and we all do — then you are doing theology. You are a theologian. The question is not whether you are one. The question is whether you are a good one.

Every one of us carries around a picture of who God is. Every decision we make, every relationship we navigate, every moment of suffering and joy is shaped by what we believe about Him. We are all reigning and ruling on His behalf in whatever context He has placed us — in our homes, our workplaces, our neighborhoods. The question is whether we are representing Him accurately, or distorting who the true God really is.

And we cannot represent Him well if we do not know Him well.

This is why Sunday mornings matter.

Sunday mornings are not a religious obligation or a weekly box to check. They are the primary place where we develop our theology — where we learn to speak true words about God. We believe the local church is the primary context for theological formation, not seminaries or academic institutions, but the gathered people of God learning together in community.

We spend each week teaching through the Bible so that we are immersed, encapsulated, submitted to, and formed by the story God intends to tell through it. We are shaped by the things that occupy our thoughts, so Paul directs us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). In short, we become what we behold. At BTX Bible Church, we want to behold Jesus so we become more like Him.

How We Teach

Comprehend high, communicate low.

We believe theology should be both deep and accessible. We work to comprehend high — to understand the richness of the Christian tradition in the deepest possible way — and to communicate low — to translate that depth into ordinary, accessible language.

This doesn't mean dumbing things down. It means doing the hard work of making deep truth understandable. A sermon should feed both the new believer and the mature saint. A song should carry truth that a child can sing and a theologian can stand behind. We want everyone — no matter where they are on the journey — to grow in their knowledge of God.

Theology that leads to worship.

Theology is never an end in itself. It is meant to lead to worship. When we behold who God is — His holiness, His grace, His faithfulness — our only right response is to worship. We sing. We pray. We preach. We take communion. All of it is theology in motion — truth about God becoming love for God.

The experience is laid back, conversational, honest, and refreshing. We aim every week to behold Jesus clearly, so that when we leave, we carry true words about God into every corner of our lives.

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God."

— Colossians 3:16
